Important: When Insurance Does Not Cover Towing

Comprehensive car insurance does not cover towing costs in the following circumstances, and the vehicle owner or driver will be personally liable for all towing, storage and associated fees:

  • Drink driving (DUI): If the driver was under the influence of alcohol at or above the legal blood alcohol limit at the time of the incident, most insurers will void cover entirely for that claim, including towing.
  • Drug driving: If the driver was impaired by illicit or prescribed drugs at the time of the incident, insurance cover is typically voided. This includes prescription medications that affect driving ability.
  • Unlicensed or disqualified drivers: If the driver was unlicensed, held a suspended licence, or was otherwise disqualified from driving at the time of the incident.
  • Use for excluded purposes: If the vehicle was being used for a purpose specifically excluded under the policy (e.g. business use on a personal-use-only policy, racing or competitive events).
  • Non-comprehensive policies: Third-party property, fire & theft, or CTP (compulsory third party) policies do not include towing cover. Only comprehensive policies provide this benefit.

Payment responsibility: Where insurance cover has been voided or does not apply, all towing, recovery and storage charges become the direct responsibility of the registered owner or driver. Tow Rite reserves the right to collect payment prior to release of the vehicle. If you are unsure whether your policy covers your situation, we recommend contacting your insurer before we dispatch.
